Huskers Strike Early, Defeat Wildcats 1-0

10/15/2015 9:25:00 PM | Women's Soccer

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. – No. 24 Northwestern fell victim to an early Nebraska goal and could not recover as the Cornhuskers claimed a 1-0 victory over the Wildcats on Thursday night at Toyota Park.

Nebraska was first squad to strike with what proved to be the difference maker of the game. In the 15th minute of play, freshman Caroline Buelt picked up a loose ball in open space and fired a long shot to the upper far.

The wind continued to work against the Wildcats in the opening frame, but Chicago's Big Ten Team created a few quality looks on goal. In the final seconds of the half, Northwestern attempted on last shot in the midst of a goal-mouth scramble, but could not capitalize on the opportunity.

Halfway through the second half, Nebraska nearly doubled its lead with a header just over sophomore keeper Lauren Clem, but the ball hit off the crossbar to keep the deficit at one.

Northwestern's best scoring chance came in the 72nd minute when the 'Cats drew an opportune foul. Fifth-year senior Niki Sebo attempted a leveler off the set piece, but her shot went just inches high of the net.

With 30 seconds left in regulation, NU drew a penalty kick as Sebo took the attempt to force the game into overtime. Unfortunately for Northwestern, the ball was and Nebraska held on for the win.

The Wildcats play their final game at Toyota Park when they host Iowa on Sunday, Oct. 18, for Senior Day. Kick off is set for noon CT, but come early to help us honor our seniors with a pre-game ceremony.
