The cheerleading team at Northwestern consists of a diverse group of individuals, that bring a variety of backgrounds and experience to the program. Cheerleaders are highly visible ambassadors for the university. They have the privilege of cheering all home football and basketball games, as well as the opportunity for travel to away football games, bowl games and the BigTen tournament. The NU Cheerleaders also make appearances at a various functions as well as philanthropic events. Team members earn athletic awards, and have scholarship opportunities.

Willie the Wildcat
The mascot known as "Willie the Wildcat" was developed in three stages. The nickname "Wildcats" was initiated in 1924. Nine years later, in 1933, the Northwestern athletic department teamed up with an advertising firm to create the first caricature of Willie. In 1947, the first mascot was actually brought to life when four members of the Alpha Delta fraternity dressed up as Willie for their Homecoming float.
