Sanchez formerly headed Western Michigan's athletic academic services department
Maria Sanchez is entering her second year at Northwestern as the assistant director of academic services and student development, having joined the staff in February of 2011. Her duties include supervising the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), the PURPLE Peer Mentoring Program, the Freshman Year Experience Program, as well as overseeing other personal and career development programs for NU student-athletes.
Sanchez came to Northwestern after previously serving as the director of athletics academic services at Western Michigan University. Prior to her time at WMU, Sanchez was a women's basketball assistant coach at her Alma mater, Millikin University, in Decatur, Ill., and served in Millikin's residence life office.
An Atlanta, Ill., native, Sanchez was a member of Millikin's women's basketball team as an undergraduate where she earned her degree in biology and secondary education. After Millikin, Sanchez graduated from Ball State University with a master's in sports and physical education, with a specialization in sports management.
