EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the Northwestern University Wildcats have come together to remind fans to avoid the hazards of distracted driving and to always wear seat belts when driving or riding.
IDOT and the 'Cats want all fans to stay focused on the road, avoid distractions, and never text while driving, whether they are driving to and from basketball games at Welsh-Ryan Arena or listening to the broadcasts on WGN Radio. In addition, it is important that all passengers buckle their seatbelts no matter where in the car they are seated - it's the law.
"It's great to be working with Northwestern University to do more to reach Wildcats fans with these life-saving traffic safety messages, designed to help them always arrive alive at their destinations," says IDOT's Interim Director of Traffic Safety, John Webber. "We all want fans to know that texting, phone use and other distractions while driving simply aren't worth the risk. Texting and phone messages can always wait until your vehicle is parked safely. And, please remember that seat belts save lives, especially if we buckle them every trip, every time."
As part of the new partnership, IDOT and Northwestern University will be reinforcing those messages in a variety of ways. Fans inside Welsh-Ryan Arena for home basketball games will hear multiple public address announcements to remind them of driving hazards and to make sure to buckle up on their way home. IDOT will also maintain a strong presence in the lobby and concourse areas at Welsh-Ryan Arena to help promote its initiatives, and to help educate Northwestern students and fans on the importance of safe driving.
Fans listening at home or in their vehicles will hear radio commercials and public service announcements from IDOT during the broadcasts, and safety messages also will be highly visible at NUsports.com with links to the IDOT Division of Traffic Safety page.
