EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern senior Patrick Ward (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) of the football team and junior Stephanie Holthus (Burlington, Ill./Central) of the volleyball team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for postseason honors they have recently collected.

A three-year starter on Northwestern's offensive line, Ward continued to garner some of the nation's top honors following a tremendous senior season. On Monday, Ward was recognized as one of 15 winners of the National Football Foundation's National Scholar-Athlete Award during the NFF's annual ceremony in New York City, and on Thursday Ward was named a first-team Capital One Academic All-American for the second straight year. Also an honorable mention All-Big Ten performer on the field for the 9-3 Wildcats, Ward is poised to make his 39th consecutive start when NU heads to the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl on Jan. 1.

Holthus was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America Third Team, the organization announced on Dec. 12. Holthus is the fourth Wildcat in NU volleyball history to receive a national All-America accolade. She led the team with 487 kills in 2012, tied for the fifth-best output in single-season history while clip of 4.87 kills per set left her tied for third in program annals. Holthus led Northwestern with 18 double-double performances and recorded at least 20 kills in a match on 10 occasions during the season.

This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is junior Marisa Bast (Orange, Calif./Villa Park) of the softball team. Marisa helped organize the softball team to be involved with Supplies for Dreams Wildcat Workouts on Saturday, Dec. 5. Supplies for Dreams hosted Chicago Public Schools for an afternoon of fitness and fun on Northwestern's campus and softball hosted one of the stations.
