EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern freshmen Lauren Douglas (Collierville, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian) of the women's basketball team and Dominick Malone (Granby, Conn./Wyoming Seminary) of the wrestling team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.
Douglas was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the third time in her young rookie campaign following strong back-to-back efforts in a trio of Northwestern victories last week. Douglas averaged 10.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.0 blocks, 2.3 assists and 2.3 steals in wins over Howard, Yale and Loyola (Chicago), notching a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds) against the Bulldogs.
Malone entered the Keystone Classic hosted by Penn as the No. 6 seed at 125 pounds but went on to win his weight class, defeating the top three seeds at his weight class en route to the title. He notched two wins by fall and eventually claimed the crown in his tournament debut with a sudden-victory win against No. 1 seed Mark Rappo of Penn.
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is junior Belinda Niu (Portland, Ore./Lincoln) of the women's tennis team. Niu has been at the forefront of Northwestern's canned food drive in recent weeks, giving her time to staff multiple sporting events and collect items from fans, staff members and fellow NU students.
