EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern junior Raleigh Smith (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) of the men's tennis team and junior Lexie Goldsmith (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) of the cross country team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their recent performances.
Smith completed NU's fall tournament season in outstanding fashion, capturing both the doubles and singles championships at the Big Ten Men's Tennis Indoor Championships on Nov. 5. Smith teamed with senior Sidarth Balaji to bring home the doubles title and coasted through the singles bracket, winning all four of his matches in straight sets. Smith capped off his run with a swift 6-0, 6-2 win over Oskar Wikberg of Wisconsin in the final match.
Goldsmith led Northwestern at the 2012 NCAA Midwest Regional Championships, placing fifth in a personal-best 6K time of 20:53.73 to earn her second straight All-Midwest Region accolade. Goldsmith's effort helped the Wildcats earn a fourth-place finish in the team standings, the best for the `Cats since taking second in 2002.
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is senior Meghan Lamberth (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) of the softball team. Lamberth has made multiple visits to Orrington Elementary School this year to participate in gym class activities, encourage active lifestyles and talk to the students about what it takes to achieve at a high level in academics and athletics.
