EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern junior Kain Colter of the football team and sophomore Anna Cassell (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) of the women's soccer team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Cassell played all 90 minutes in Northwestern's 1-0 shutout of Michigan State in the 2012 finale Saturday in East Lansing. She made six saves, which helped the Wildcats post their second shutout in as many games, win their third consecutive Big Ten match and most notably, give head coach Michael Moynihan his 200th career victory.
Colter had a hand in all four Northwestern touchdowns on the day, rushing for three while also throwing a 47-yard TD strike to Christian Jones to help NU defeat Iowa for the sixth time in the last eight meetings. Colter contributed a career-high 166 rushing yards to a Northwestern offense that racked up 349 total ground yards, with Colter averaging 6.4 yards on each of his 26 carries. With his three rushing touchdowns, Colter assumed the Northwestern team lead with 11 on the season and moved into sixth on the school's career list with 22 rushing scores.
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is junior Megan Goss (Brentwood, Tenn./Ravenwood) of the women's swimming team. Goss and her teammate, Jackie Powell, organized an evening of music, fun and swimming called the Breaststroke4BreastCancer to benefit local cancer research. The event drew dozens of participants, including NU student-athletes from a range of sports, and far surpassed the organizers' goal of raising $5,000.
