EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern senior Chelsea Armstrong (Perth, Australia/Penrhos) of the field hockey team and junior Venric Mark (Tomball, Texas/St. Pius X) of the football team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Armstrong native collected the game-winning goal in Northwestern's narrow win over the Spartans on Friday before having a memorable day on Sunday. Armstrong tallied two goals in each half with the final one being the 100th of her storied career. She is just the ninth player in NCAA history to reach the milestone. Her final goal of the game was also her 29th of the season which broke the previous NU single-season record of 28 that was established by Lisa Griswold in 1983. Armstrong's 29 goals lead the nation.
Mark surpassed the 100-yard rushing plateau for the fifth time in seven games this season Saturday against Nebraska, reaching 118 yards thanks in part to an 80-yard scoring run that tied for the eighth-longest run in school history. Mark, who is the Big Ten leader in all-purpose yards per game this season, enters this week's matchup with Iowa needing 90 yards to become the first Wildcat since Tyrell Sutton in 2006 to post a 1,000-yard rushing season.
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is freshman Shelly Patton (Littleton, Colo.) of the women's swimming team. Patton hosted a group of Chicago Public School students at Patten Gym last week, giving them a look at the life of a Northwestern student-athlete and reminding them of the importance of academics.
