KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA) will recognize Northwestern Deputy Director of Athletics/Student-Athlete Welfare Janna Blais on Oct. 15 at the 2013 Jostens Administrator of the Year Luncheon. Over the summer, Blais received the honor of 2013 Administrator of the Year for Division I FBS and is one of eight honorees that will be recognized at the luncheon in San Diego.
"NACWAA is pleased to celebrate and honor these women who work diligently each day to represent their institutions and conferences in extraordinary ways," said Jane Miller, NACWAA awards committee chair and board of directors member. "Their commitment to the advancement of women at all levels of our profession ensures a bright future for those who aspire to a career in athletics. By honoring these inspiring women, we thank them for their outstanding service and leadership."
The Administrator of the Year award, sponsored by Jostens, is presented annually to the NACWAA members for their significant contributions made as athletics administrators. Blais was nominated by her peers and selected by the NACWAA Awards Committee for her service during the 2012-13 academic year.
Blais has served as a mentor to many, an advocate for gender equity and a passionate visionary in the field of intercollegiate athletics since arriving at Northwestern in February of 2010. During her time at Northwestern, Blais has overhauled the athletic department's compliance, academic and health service operations for the benefit of the student-athletes. She also has played a key role in the development of the NU For Life and Community Relations departments, both of which have a direct impact on the Northwestern student-athlete community.
"Janna has done a tremendous job creating, communicating and implementing a vision to improve the student-athlete welfare at Northwestern," NU head football coach Pat Fitzgerald said. "Janna's passion for improving the overall experience of our student-athletes is contagious and has had a significant impact on our student-athletes, and equally on our staff. The student-athlete experience at Northwestern is as good as it's ever been, and continues to significantly improve each year under Janna's leadership."
As deputy director of athletics at Northwestern, Blais leads and manages all student-athlete welfare departments: compliance, academic services, sports performance and athletic training. She serves as the department's liaison at Big Ten and NCAA meetings, and internally, is the liaison to the admissions, financial aid and provost offices, as well as the committee for athletics and recreation (CAR). Blais also serves as the sport administrator for men's and women's soccer, women's basketball and women's lacrosse.
