EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern junior John Callahan (Hinsdale, Ill./Benet Academy) of the men's golf team and senior Chelsea Armstrong (Perth, Australia/Penrhos) have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
In an incredible finish Monday to the 2012 Windon Memorial Classic at Skokie Country Club, Callahan sank a 25-foot birdie putt on his final hole for medalist honors in NU's home tournament. Callahan officially held the overnight lead after carding a 2-under 69 in Sunday's first round and not being able to finish his second when play on the 36-hole opening day was suspended due to darkness. On Monday, Callahan found himself tied entering his final hole before he sank his remarkable putt on a lengthy 230-yard par 3 for the first medal of his college career.
Armstrong continued her torrid scoring pace with three goals in two games last week, including two in Northwestern's Big Ten-opener at Ohio State. She put the Wildcats on the board in their second game of the weekend, a 2-1 victory over Ohio. Armstrong ranks fourth in the country with 3.27 points per game and is second in total goals scored with 16 for the No. 10-ranked Wildcats.
Northwestern senior Steve Flaherty (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) of the football team visited Lincolnwood Elementary School Monday as part of Read Across Evanston. Flaherty read to the students and talked to them about the importance of reading and being a lifelong learner.
