EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern sophomore Chi Chi Ariguzo of the football team and senior Madalyn Shalter of the volleyball team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.
Ariguzo took home Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors Monday following his career-best performance of 10 tackles and three tackles for loss Saturday against Vanderbilt. Ariguzo's three TFL's were the most by an NU player in a single game since Quentin Davie recorded three against Rice in 2010.
Shalter averaged 12.64 assists per set in wins against Brown, Villanova and Yale as she helped propel the Wildcats to their third tournament crown in as many weeks. The Ottawa, Ohio, native also added 3.36 digs per set, eight kills, four service aces and three blocks during the tournament. Shalter turned in one of her best individual performances of the season in Saturday's 3-1 win against Yale. She handed out a season-high 54 assists, three shy of her career-best effort, as the 'Cats knocked off the reigning Ivy League champions. Shalter also added 16 digs and five kills at a clip of .714 (5 kills -- 0 errors -- 7 attempts).
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is junior place-kicker Jeff Budzien (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) of the football team. Budzien spoke last week on behalf of the Positive Coaching Alliance at Wildwood Elementary School in Chicago. Supporting the PCA's mission of promoting good sportsmanship and ensuring a positive experience for all youth athletes, Budzien talked to the students at Wildwood about the place that sportsmanship and fair play have in Division I college football.
