EVANSTON, Ill. -- A school-record 10 Northwestern programs received Public Recognition Awards today (June 14) as part of the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) program.
The 10 NU athletic programs were honored for being in the top-10 percent of their respective sports in the latest multi-year APR scores. The total is one higher than last year's nine awards and matches the school's previous best of 10 achieved in 2010. Northwestern led the Big Ten in Public Recognition Awards, doubling the total of the second-place school (Ohio State with five honors).
Wildcat teams recognized for being in the top 10 percent are: football, men's golf, men's soccer, men's tennis, wrestling, softball, women's cross country, women's golf, women's swimming and women's volleyball. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 academic years.
"Not only have our student-athletes remained leaders among their peers academically, but they have done so while excelling in competition," Director of Athletics and Recreation Jim Phillips said. "Our football program played in bowl games in all four of the years included in this APR data, and the other nine teams had NCAA postseason representation in at least one of those years as well."
The APR provides a real-time view of a team's academic success by tracking the progress of each student-athlete during the school year. By measuring eligibility and retention each semester or quarter, the APR provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. An APR score of 925 is the minimum level of academic success; teams scoring below 925 can lose scholarships and face other sanctions over time, including bans on postseason play.
The full APR release with data for every team in the NCAA will be released Wednesday, June 20. For the complete NCAA release on its APR Public Recognition Awards, link to ncaa.org.
