EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern freshman Anna Edwards (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) of the softball team and junior Zach Morton (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) of the baseball team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances last weekend.
With Northwestern's NCAA Championship hopes hinging on the outcome of a three-game set with Illinois, Edwards hit a key game-tying solo home run in the fifth inning of the series-opener, helping the Wildcats rally for the win. In game two, Edwards added a late insurance RBI with a run-scoring double in the sixth to extend NU's two-run lead before scoring herself to account for the final 7-3 winning margin. She then secured her first-career triple in NU's 10-2 run-rule win in Saturday's season finale, putting the Wildcats in position to earn their eighth NCAA Championship bid in the last 11 years.
Morton was a catalyst for the Northwestern offense in its weekend series with Indiana, which included a 4-for-4 afternoon with one walk on Saturday. Morton finished with six hits on the weekend, raising his team-best total for the season to 57 and improving his batting average to .295, good for second on the squad.
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is junior Jessica Rubin (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) of the women's soccer team. Rubin attended Dewey Elementary's Fitness Friday Soccer Style event, coaching the children through introductory soccer drills and speaking to them about the importance of focusing on academics.
