EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern senior Linda Abu Mushrefova (Bradenton, Fla./Pendleton) of the women's tennis team and junior Jack Perry (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) of the men's golf team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Abu Mushrefova was a key component in Northwestern extending its remarkable run of success at the Big Ten Women's Tennis Championship, completing and winning all three of her No. 4 singles matches over the course of the tournament and contributing to an upset of the nation's third-ranked doubles team of Mary Weatherholt and Patricia Veresova in a semifinal win over Purdue. Abu Mushrefova, who was the only player in the Big Ten to post a perfect 11-0 singles record in conference play this season, provided the clinching point in NU's 4-1 defeat of Michigan in the conference title match on Sunday.
Perry led Northwestern at the 2013 Big Ten Championships with his seventh-place finish, shooting a 6-over 294 for the 72-hole tournament to place in the top 10 at the conference event for the first time in his career.
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is freshman Christian Salem (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica) of the football team. Salem and his teammates spent Friday, April 26, raising money for the Misericordia Home by collecting money at Northwestern's arch and at other locations around campus, part of Misericordia's annual Candy Days fundraiser.
