EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern Athletics today announced the inaugural Run For Walk, a 4.1 mile run and 5K family walk July 29 to honor former head football coach Randy Walker. The race will finish on Ryan Field and benefit C.A.R.E. for the Evanston Animal Shelter.

For the past four years, the Walk for Randy has gathered Northwestern fans, supporters and friends of the late Walker to honor him by taking part in one of his favorite hobbies -- walking around Evanston and the NU campus with his wife, Tammy, and their dog, Magic.

This year, the 5k family walk will continue as part of the inaugural Run for Walk, a 4.1 mile run through Evanston's tree-lined streets and along the lakefront on Northwestern's campus. Participants will finish on Ryan Field while watching their achievement on the video board. The unique run distance harkens back to Randy's uniform number 41 during his collegiate playing days at Miami University.

The registration fee for the run or walk is $35 and includes a short-sleeved Under Armour technical shirt, a ticket to a nonconference home football game and entry into the race day fitness fest. Northwestern students may register for $20. The beneficiary of all proceeds is C.A.R.E. for the Evanston Animal Shelter, a local organization with a cause Randy supported.

In addition, the event will feature the free Kids' 'Cat Dash on Ryan Field. All kids eighth grade and under can check their 40- and 100-yard dash times on the same field where Wildcat football players compete.

Fans are encouraged to register online or visit for more event details. Questions should be directed to wildcatmarketing@northwestern.eduor by calling 847-491-7504.
