EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern seniors Adrienne Monka (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) of the softball team and Sam Chien (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) of the men's golf team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Monka batted .500 with nine RBIs, slugged 1.214 and reached base with a .667 success rate in five Northwestern contests last week and crushed three home runs along the way, becoming the fourth player in NU history to reach the 50-home run plateau for her career. One of those dingers was a tie-breaking two-run blast in the first game of a double-header with Ohio State that landed on the roof of nearby McGaw Hall, beyond the left-centerfield fence of Sharon J. Drysdale Field. It was the sixth home run ever reach the roof.
Chien battled his way to a silver medal finish as the runner-up at the Big Ten Men's Golf Championships this weekend in French Lick, Ind., helping Northwestern move up the team standings on the final day and place fourth overall. Chien's charge at the individual championship included four birdies on the front nine in the final round, eventually finishing with a 1-under 287 for the tournament and as an All-Tournament team selection.
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is junior David Nwabuisi (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) of the football team. Nwabuisi served as one of several tour guides for the Chicago Youth Sports Alliance tour of Northwestern's campus and athletic facilities. The CYSA was founded with the goal of using team sports as a platform to improve the social and academic development of underprivileged children.
