EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern seniors Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School) of the men's golf team and Shannon Smith (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) of the women's lacrosse team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Chun, a week removed from winning an individual championship at Indiana's NYX Hoosier Invitational, paced the Wildcats in NU's fourth-place finish at the Kepler Intercollegiate hosted by Ohio State this weekend. Chun fired a final-round 73 to finish alone in fifth place in the individual standings and help Northwestern post the lowest final-round score of any team at the event. The senior is making a run at Luke Donald's school record for single-season scoring average and currently stands at 70.7.
Smith totaled five goals and four assists in a pair of Northwestern wins over ranked opponents this week. Smith notched two goals in NU's 8-7 victory over No. 3 North Carolina, including what proved to be the game-winner with 9:41 remaining. On Sunday, Smith notched three goals and four assists in an exciting 16-12 win over No. 19 Johns Hopkins. In the last week, Smith has moved into the top 15 all-time in Division I women's lacrosse in both points (332) and goals (236).
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is senior Brian Arnfelt (Lake Elmo, Minn./Stillwater). Arnfelt has taken the lead in organizing his Wildcat Games team for weekly visits to the Evanston YMCA Children's Center, spending time each Friday playing games and interacting with the kids at the center.
