EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern senior Jason Welch (Walnut Creek, Calif./Las Lomas) of the wrestling team and senior Chloe Grainger (Decatur, Ga./Decatur) of the fencing team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Grainger earned her third straight bid to the NCAA Fencing Championships with a third-place finish in the sabre competition at the NCAA Midwest Regional Saturday in South Bend. Grainger won a career-high 13 bouts at the regional against just two defeats. The NU senior was dominant at times as she out-touched her opposition, 70-34, over the course of the regional championships.
Welch wrestled his way to his first career Big Ten championship at 157 pounds Sunday in Champaign, Ill., doing so in exhilarating fashion with a third-period pin of Nebraska's James Green. The senior trailed by a 4-3 score as time ticked under one minute to go in the match, but he caught his opponent in a cradle and secured the fall for the win. In the process, Welch avenged his only loss of the season and will head into next week's NCAA Championships with a 30-1 record on the year.
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is senior Meredith Finsand (Edina, Minn./Edina) of the women's soccer team. Finsand was a member of Dance Marathon's Dancer Relation Committee and helped organize student-athletes participating on the food committee throughout the 30-hour event. Meredith, who also serves as co-president of NU's Student-Athlete Advisory Council, was on hand for all 30 hours of this year's Dance Marathon, which raised more than $1.2 million.
