EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern senior Alex Frank (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) of the women's lacrosse team and junior Spencer Wolf (Coral Springs, Fla./Laurel Springs) of the men's tennis team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Frank wreaked havoc on the William & Mary offense Saturday, finishing with a career-best six caused turnovers to tie for the second-highest single-game performance in NU school history. Frank's big day moved her up two spots on NU's career caused turnovers list, putting her third with 81 ahead of her sister Meredith and former Wildcat great Courtney Koester. Frank also had four ground balls in the 19-7 win over the Tribe, helping NU hold its opponent below 10 goals for the sixth straight time to open the 2012 season.
Wolf scored an upset of the nation's 21st-ranked singles player, Roy Kalamanovich of Illinois, Friday in NU's Combe Tennis Center. Wolf won his No. 2 singles match in straight sets over Kalamanovich, 6-3, 6-2, to improve to 9-4 this season in dual singles action. Earlier in the match, Wolf teamed with Chris Jackman to pull out an 8-7 tiebreaker win at No. 2 doubles against the Illini's Tim Kopinski and Ross Guignon.
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is sophomore Kelsey Thompson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) of the field hockey team. Thompson attended Willard Elementary's annual Jump Rope for Heart event on Friday, encouraging youngsters to be active and live healthy lifestyles.
