EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern has announced that Wildcat senior John Shurna (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) of the men's basketball team and senior Jenny Wilson (Bethesda, Md./Sidwell Friends School) of the women's swimming team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.

Shurna became the all-time leading scorer in Northwestern history on Saturday night, pouring in 18 points to surpass a 35-year-old record previously held by Billy McKinney in a 64-53 victory over Minnesota. With just under 11 minutes remaining, Shurna stepped into a 3-point attempt and buried it to reach 1,902 points, two better than McKinney's career total. Shurna finished 7-of-15 from the field with six boards and two assists, putting the finishing touches on a week that began with his 29-point outburst against No. 18 Indiana on Wednesday.

Wilson swam down a Northwestern record that had stood for 13 years not once, but twice on the final day of the Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships, turning in a remarkable time of 2:09.59 in the 200 breaststroke to place fifth in the conference. Wilson's mark was just 34 one-hundredths shy of an NCAA `A' cut effort. Earlier in the Championships, Wilson had taken sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke with her time of 1:00.98.

This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is junior Reggie Hearn (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider) of the men's basketball team. Hearn and several of his teammates visited The Barbereaux School of Evanston last week to read stories, play on the playground and sign autographs for the youngsters, who greeted the players to their school with welcome posters they had made.
