EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern junior Taylor Thornton (Dallas, Texas/Hockaday School) of the women's lacrosse team and senior Sam Chien (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) of the men's golf team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.
Thornton was a dominant presence all over the field for Northwestern in NU's 18-6 season-opening victory at No. 6 Stanford Friday night. Thornton scored the Wildcats' first goal of the season just 32 seconds into the game and later opened the scoring in the second half as well, finishing with her second career two-goal game. Defensively, Thornton racked up five draw controls, three caused turnovers and three ground balls in helping limit a strong Stanford lineup to only six goals.
Chien finished 4-0 in Northwestern's run to its third straight Big Ten Match Play championship at Concessions Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla. Chien came back from a one-hole deficit on the back-nine against Minnesota's Jon Tramasar in the clinching championship match, capping a weekend that began with Chien winning on a back-nine charge in the deciding match of a tiebreaker win over Penn State in round one.
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is junior Allegra Mayer (Palo Alto, Calif./Henry M. Gunn) of the cross country team. Mayer was one of a handful of student-athletes who participated in a National Girls and Women in Sports Day roundtable discussion before the Northwestern women's basketball game on Sunday. Mayer and her fellow Wildcats sat down with young girls to talk to them about their experiences as student-athletes and how they can reach their goals in the future.
