EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern senior John Shurna (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) of the men's basketball team and freshman Morgan Jones (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lake Mary) of the women's basketball team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.
Shurna, the Big Ten's leading scorer this season, averaged 26.0 points per game and shot a blistering 71.4 percent from the field in the two contests. Shurna shot 9-for-13 from the field and 7-for-8 from the free throw line in scoring 28 points in Thursday's win over Nebraska. At Illinois on Sunday, Shurna made 11-of-15 field goal attempts and scored 17 of his game-high 24 points in the second half in leading NU to its first win at Assembly Hall since 1999. He also surpassed Evan Eschmeyer in the contest to move into second place on Northwestern's career scoring list.
Jones notched a game-high 25 points on the road at Michigan last week, falling just two points shy of her career high. She added five assists, seven rebounds and three steals en route to earning Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors for the fourth time this season.
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is sophomore Megan Goss (Brentwood, Tenn./Ravenwood) of the women's swimming team. Goss and members of the women's swimming team visited Mather LiveWays Senior Residence in Evanston to host an ice cream social. Activities coordinators at the Mather remarked after the event that the residents continued to talk about how fun the social was and their pleasant afternoon with Goss and her teammates.
