EVANSTON, Ill. - It's a busy week for Northwestern Athletics as 10 different teams are in action. The NU men's and women's basketball, men's tennis and fencing teams all host home events while the defending NCAA champion lacrosse team begins its title defense Friday on the road with the regular-season opener. The men's and women's golf and softball squads also kick off their 2012 campaign this weekend and wrestling, along with women's tennis continue their seasons on the road. Notable: John Shurna, the reigning Big Ten Co-Player of the Week, surpassed Evan Eschmeyer to move into second place on Northwestern's career scoring list in Sunday's win over Illinois. He enters play this week trailing Billy McKinney by 92 points for the top spot in program history.

This Week's Promotions: Northwestern women's basketball, in partnership with Northwestern Memorial Hospital, will host its annual breast cancer awareness day, formally known as the Pink Zone, Sunday. This year, the initiative has been re-branded as "Play4Kay" in honor of the late NC State head coach, Kay Yow, who passed away in 2009 of breast cancer. The game will feature special jerseys and ceremonial presentations. Early-arriving fans will receive a pink Northwestern basketball t-shirt, courtesy of Northwestern Memorial. Free face painting and poster making will be available during the game and the Northwestern women's basketball team will sign autographs postgame. America's Best Frisbee Dogs will perform at halftime. There also is a pregame cheer clinic with the Northwestern WildPride Spirit Squad. In honor of the national initiative sponsored by the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport, Northwestern women's basketball is hosting its annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Feb. 12. There is a pregame event, which will begin at 10:30 a.m., in Welsh-Ryan Arena that is open to girls in the 4th-12th grade. More information can be found here, or by emailing email@example.com.

Notable: This marks the 2012 season-opener for Northwestern, the 2011 NCAA champions and winners of six of the last seven national titles. Led by returning national player of the year Shannon Smith, top-ranked NU travels to No. 6 Stanford to try to snap the Cardinal's 22-game home winning streak.

Notable: Northwestern begins the 2012 season facing some tough competition right off the bat at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. The 'Cats take on five opponents, including top-ranked and defending NCAA champions Arizona State Friday at 8 p.m. CT. The NU squad is led by senior Adrienne Monka and junior Emily Allard who both were recently named to the 50-member watch list for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award.

Notable: The 'Cats begin their busiest stretch of the season to date Tuesday with three matches in six days. Northwestern faced all three teams in 2011 with mixed results. The Wildcats defeated Middle Tennessee State and were edged by Vanderbilt in Evanston. The team also lost at Notre Dame last March.

Notable: The Wildcats are seeking their third team title in four years at the prestigious tournament. Northwestern won back-to-back ITA National Team Indoor Championships in 2009 and 2010.

Notable: Northwestern hits the road one last time for the 2011-12 regular season, visiting Buies Creek, N.C. to face its two final nonconference opponents. The 'Cats square off against North Carolina at 3:30 p.m. and then Campbell, who is hosting Saturday's duals, at 5:15 p.m. Northwestern looks to stay perfect in out of conference duals, bringing a 5-0 nonconference record into Saturday's matches.

Notable: Northwestern opens up the 2012 spring season at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Mar, P.R. This year's event features 15 teams, including five from the Big Ten. NU competed at the Lady Puerto Rico last season and tied for sixth out of 18 teams with Lauren Weaver leading the way in a tie for fourth with a 2-over 218. The Wildcats look to build on their successful fall campaign where they had three top-10 finishes out of four events.

Notable: NU's plays its first of five events on the 2012 spring schedule this weekend at the Big Ten Match Play Championship at the Heron Bay Golf Club in Coral Springs, Fla. This is the first competition for Northwestern since early November, when the 'Cats closed out their fall season at the Gifford CordeValle Collegiate.
