EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern seniors Jared Swopshire (St. Louis, Mo./IMG Academy/Louisville) of the men's basketball team and Kate Turvy (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin-Coffman) of the women's tennis team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.

Swopshire averaged 13.5 points and 12 rebounds in Northwestern's two contests last week. In a victory over No. 12/14 Minnesota on Wednesday, he paced the Wildcats with 16 points and eight rebounds as NU earned its second victory over a ranked opponent in a seven-day span. Swopshire followed up the performance by scoring 11 points and grabbing a career-high 16 rebounds on Saturday at Nebraska. The 16 boards were the most by a Northwestern player since Evan Eschmeyer had 21 on Jan. 20, 1999.

Ranked No. 67 nationally in singles play, Turvy posted a 2-0 record from her No. 1 singles spot in the NU lineup in the Wildcats' wins over Arkansas and Purdue in the first and second rounds of the ITA National Indoor Team Championships. Turvy began the weekend by winning her doubles contest and defeating Arkansas' Yang Park, 6-1, 6-2, to provide the clinching point against the Razorbacks. On Saturday, Turvy won a tough first set vs. 80th-ranked Lynda Xepoleas of Purdue before cruising in the second set, 6-0.

This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is freshman Joseph Jones (Plano, Ill./Plano) of the football team. Jones was one of several football players to join members of Our Place of New Trier Township in a bowling excursion this week. Our Place of New Trier is a center dedicated to supporting teens and adults with developmental disabilities so they can live meaningful, productive lives.
