EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern junior Kate Turvy (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) of the women's tennis team and freshman Mike McMullan (Easton, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) of the wrestling team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Turvy was named the Big Ten's Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week after her win over 23rd-ranked Jackie Wu of Vanderbilt (6-2, 6-4) at No. 1 singles helped the 12th-ranked Wildcats to a 5-2 win over the 15th-ranked Commodores. Turvy improved to 11-4 overall in singles this year with the victory. Earlier, the junior teamed with sophomore Belinda Niu (Portland, Ore./Lincoln) to defeat VU's Nelly Radeva and Lauren Mira in doubles play, 8-6.
McMullan upset 10th-ranked Mike McClure of Michigan State in the heavyweight bout of NU's 30-12 dual victory over the Spartans Friday night. McMullan's narrow 3-1 victory in the match was his second straight win over a top-10 ranked opponent and upped his season mark to 16-7 with a 3-2 record in Big Ten duals.
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is freshman Zack Oliver (Baton Rouge, La./Catholic) of the football team. After receiving a 32-inch flat-screen television as a bowl gift from the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas, Oliver opted to donate his TV to the McGaw YMCA Children's Center rather than keep it. Oliver brought the TV to the center on Tuesday, spending time with several classrooms of children and bringing them purple Northwestern hats.
