EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern junior Raleigh Smith (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) of the men's tennis team and freshman Charlotte Sands (New York, N.Y./Horace Mann School) of the fencing team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Smith, ranked No. 108 nationally in singles play, led Northwestern to a season-opening sweep of a doubleheader with dual victories against Ball State (6-1) and Western Michigan (5-2). The junior won in straight sets at No. 1 singles against the Cardinals and, later in the day, gutted out a third-set tiebreaker to post a win at the No. 2 singles position. Smith also teamed with Sidarth Balaji to go 2-0 at the second doubles spot on the day.
Sands led the Wildcats to a successful return to the dual meet season, pacing the team in bout victories with 12 in last weekend's Western Invitational. Sands' foil squad did not lose a round on the day as the Wildcats posted wins over UC San Diego, Florida, Air Force, Stanford and Cal Tech.
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is redshirt freshman Jarrell Williams (Robbins, Ill./Oak Lawn Richards) of the football team. Williams joined two fellow Wildcats in visiting Edison Elementary School Friday afternoon to visit a fifth grade classroom. The student-athletes held a Q&A session about what it takes to succeed in school and sports before participating in the youngsters' gym class.
