EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern seniors Jason Welch (Walnut Creek, Calif./Las Lomas) of the wrestling team and Quentin Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) of the football team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.

Welch went a perfect 5-0 at the 50th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships to capture the 157-pound title, in the process becoming the third wrestler in school history to win multiple championships at NU wrestling's signature home event. As the top-seeded wrestler in the weight class, Welch shut out three opponents, including a 4-0 victory over No. 3 seed and fourth-ranked Joey Napoli of Lehigh in the finals.

Williams spearheaded a tremendous defensive effort by the Wildcats in their 34-20 victory over Mississippi State in the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl on New Year's Day. On the third play from scrimmage, Williams intercepted a Bulldogs pass and returned it 29 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 Northwestern lead -- the first of four NU picks in the game. Williams added two tackles for loss in the game, including a sack on Mississippi State's last-gasp drive late in the contest.

This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is freshman Ifeadi Odenigbo (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) of the football team. Odenigbo was one of six Wildcats who took time during NU's bowl trip to Jacksonville to visit the Wolfson Children's Hospital in an effort to brighten the holiday seasons of young patients. The 'Cats brought gifts to the youngsters and chatted with them about sports and their other favorite activities. Click here to watch Odenigbo give a video recap of NU's trip to Jacksonville's Wolfson Children's Center.
